#Lourdes The Ultimate Pilgrimage Walk
Located in the foothills of the Pyrenees in southwestern France, Lourdes transformed from a quiet agricultural town into a global center of pilgrimage following the 1858 apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Bernadette Soubirous. Today, the town is uniquely shaped by its geography, with the fast-flowing Gave de Pau river carving a natural boundary between the historic medieval core and the expansive religious domain. Our walking route traces the steps of millions of pilgrims, beginning in the bustling commercial center on Rue de la Grotte and crossing the historic Pont-Vieux over the Gave de Pau. We proceed down Avenue Bernadette Soubirous, passing through the grand Porte Saint-Joseph to enter the Rosary Esplanade. After ascending the monumental ramps to explore the Upper Basilica and the Crypt, we descend to view the stunning mosaics of the Rosary Basilica before following the riverbank path to the sacred Grotto. Finally, we walk back through the historic town center, passing Place Peyramale and navigating the medieval streets toward the commanding Château Fort, a fortress that has stood guard over the region since Roman times.
