STORYLINE:
Pope Leo XIV stepped behind the walls of a Carmelite monastery in Lourdes on Sunday for a private meeting with cloistered nuns, a quieter stop on a pilgrimage otherwise marked by vast crowds, prayers for the sick and a renewed defense of human dignity.

The encounter with the Carmelite sisters was closed to the public, in contrast with a day in which Leo celebrated Mass before huge crowds and met sick and disabled pilgrims at the sanctuary.

Shortly before entering the monastery, Leo met sick and disabled pilgrims at the Catholic shrine of Lourdes, telling them they were “not a burden” and condemning assisted dying weeks after France enacted a law allowing it under certain conditions.

Later, Pope Leo XIV concluded his stay in Lourdes on Sunday evening with one of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes’ signature rites: the Rosary and a torchlight procession.

Together with thousands of faithful he walked in a procession with behind the Statue of the Virgin Mary praying the Rosary and an ocean of pilgrims with candles surrounding him.

Pope Leo XIV visited the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes as part of his four-day apostolic journey to France, which is the first official papal state visit to the country in 18 years.
